I wanted to mention a few of my favorite films released in other years that I've only gotten around to seeing in the last 326 days or so, but sure enjoyed. Ratings are based on how well a film held my attention while watching it and whether or not I keep thinking about it/re-watching it, as well as rating the film as soon as possible after seeing it.
Dave Made a Maze
This movie is great. I watched it two days in a row and maybe another time after that. It was a lot of fun, even if others I watched it with didn't enjoy it quite as much. It seems like the sort of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil experience, where tropes are lampooned and it has has to be watched with everyone. Exact same style of movie, minus the setup.
1917
Wow. I was really grateful to watch this movie with my brother. He knew a lot of trivia about it and really helped make it a 10/10 movie experience. 9/10 on my part for not having much control over the lighting in the room and missing part of a dark scene. Such is life, sometimes.
The Foreigner
Or, "(Less) Taken: Sad Version. Starring Jackie Chan instead of Liam Neeson." (Which, as a joke, feels a little disingenuous, because I really do mean it is a sad movie, but it's worth mentioning that it also stars Jackie Chan. That way, fellow humans don't get confused looking for some movie called Less Taken starring Liam Neeson.)
The Talented Mr. Ripley
I couldn't believe this movie. At first, I didn't really care for the first scene and the last scene, but the more I thought about them, the more they fit. Fantastic cast, crazy story adapted from a book and into another movie first or something like that (I think, I haven't seen it, but can't help feeling it'll only disappoint somehow in having seen this one first.)
Eraserhead
I'm so thankful I waited until this year to see Eraserhead. Yes, it's weird. It's also a really good way to do horror. So good that anecdotes exist about Stanley Kubrick wanting to make a movie scarier than Eraserhead and set out to make The Shining. Anyway, I don't think I would have understood this film as much as I did(?) if viewed earlier. I've coped with similar anxieties as Lynch seems to have expressed when he made this, and it's well done: The sets, the actors and especially the sound design. The story is odd, but this is also the 5th David Lynch film I've seen, so expectations were already shifted to "Lynchian".
Check back next month for my favorite movies from this year!
